Whites and Darks

Does it feel bold to choose white for a master bedroom? What color should you paint your trim? Always go with a white trim for interiors. We recommend a white that’s a bit muted so the other colors you choose will stand out. Choosing black for your exterior trim, however, REALLY makes the body color of your house pop!

White paint is versatile, timeless, and has many practical benefits. White is a classic color that complements any home style and can make a house look clean, fresh, and polished. White paint reflects sunlight, which can help keep your home cooler in the summer and, in turn, reduce your energy costs. White paint is less likely to fade than other colors, so it can help maintain your home's fresh appearance longer. However, white paint can show dirt and stains more easily than other colors, so it may require more cleaning.

Paint It Black!

Black can make a house more interesting, especially if it lacks character or architecture. It can also bring out details that are already present. There are some things to consider when thinking about black paint. Black paint absorbs heat, which can increase cooling costs in the summer. Black paint can fade and peel faster than light paint because it absorbs more direct sunlight. Painting an exterior door black can cause it to swell and shrink, which can lead to warping, cracking, or splitting. Choose your black paint wisely. Some black paints have undertones of blue or brown, while others are neutral and pair well with any color.

When it comes to choosing the perfect shade of white for your next painting project, unfortunately, there’s no singular solution. When selecting white paint there's a fine line between a fresh, relaxing vibe and leaving your home looking sterile, so you'll want to think about which white creates the right feeling.

Which White? Cool, Warm, or Neutral

Cool whites have undertones of blue, green, or grey that give a crisp, clean, and modern look to any space. They can create a sense of calm and serenity, making them perfect for areas where you want to feel relaxed and refreshed.

Warm whites have undertones of red, yellow, or beige that create a cozy and welcoming vibe. They can make a space feel warm and comfortable, perfect for areas where you want to relax and unwind. Warm whites can help soften spaces that don't get a lot of sun.

Neutral whites have balanced undertones, meaning they don’t lean too much towards cool or warm. These whites offer a clean, versatile, and balanced look that can work in any space, making them a great choice when you want a pure white without strong undertones. These shades allow for easy scheming with many other colors and provide subtle warmth and great light reflection.
